Key information
Montagu Evans were the planning and historic environment and townscape consultants, for the proposal of the redevelopment of Hertford theater, which has now been given the go ahead by East Herts District Council (EHDC). The decision comes after extensive work and engagement with council officers, Historic England, theatres trust and local stakeholders.
The theatre opened in the late 70s and is owned and managed by EHDC. Under plans designed by Bennett Associates, its redevelopment would include partial demolition, refurbishment and extension of the theatre. This includes improvements to the main auditorium, the creation of three new cinema spaces, a studio theatre, dance studio, room for hire, offices and a bar/café space.
The design carefully considers the theaters conservation sensitive setting and makes the most of its location. As a result of the redevelopment, the surrounding area will be improved with better links to Hertford castle and improved provision for walking and cycling.
Covid-19 has highlighted the need to hold on to a sense of community. The improvement works will ensure that Hertford Theatre can meet demand and will sustainably stand the test of time.
The theatre will have an even greater community presence; with better accessibility and its modern facilities. This project is a great example of how the arts can support the future of town centres.
