Given the recent London mayoral elections, my experience this month was rather topically centred around the GLA. Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend a meeting at the GLA which was quite an exciting experience given the recent elections. There were a large number of attendees at the meeting which featured a round-table discussion on strategic planning issues. As such, it was really interesting to see the integration between stakeholders and representatives from both the public and private sector and how the various interests could align or conflict in terms of establishing spatial visions and objectives.
In addition to attending a meeting at the GLA, this month I was also involved in a project which is GLA referable. This is experience which you can only really gain from working on large strategic projects within London as such it is something which I have not been involved in before. Due to the nature of the proposed development and given the recent elevation of a new mayor it will be interesting to see how the proposed development will be received politically.
I have always had an interest in current affairs and my recent experience on working on projects with the GLA has widened my understanding of the political side of planning and is an area of planning which seems really interesting and topical. In terms of what we may see from the new Mayor… watch this space!
