This week I have been out of London catching up on a bit of retail therapy. Not the usual kind of retail therapy but I have been involved in two planning applications for retail sites in Derby and Coventry. Both are for a very large client who invests across the UK in Retail and Distribution properties.
The proposals include a new supermarket and a number of other retail uses. My role in the application is to produce the Planning and Retail Statements. These are quite lengthy reports that not only assess the application against National and Local Policy, but provide a quantitative assessment of the need for such retail development in the area.
Retail planning differs slightly from residential planning in this sense and being able to get your head around a sequential site assessment or two definitely adds another string to your bow. Luckily, Montagu Evans has a strong background in both Retail and Residential schemes, which as a young planner I find particularly useful as it gives you exposure to more than one avenue of development.
Aside from retail, the great run of the Montagu Evans football team finally ended last week after getting through to the last 8 in the London Property Cup. Next year, it will be ours!
