Moustaches, Planning Permissions and Consents

This past month has been very insightful at Montagu Evans as my role here has become much more intense with increased exposure to the multi-faceted arenas of the property planning professional.

Firstly I have submitted several retail applications this month and obtained consent for another. The trend among all these different applications is they were all listed buildings in different conservation areas. This means that the building(s) were statutorily designated heritage assets, which in planning terms means, the building is protected, therefore the amount of change it can undergo is limited. For any proposal to a listed building to have a fighting chance go gaining planning permission, it must retain the elements of the listed building which contributes to its character and significance (e.g. a unique façade). Furthermore, it much be demonstrated that the proposals do not negatively impact the buildings contribution to the Conservation Area in which it is located. Addressing these factors are key to determining planning applications of this type.

Also, I was part of the Montagu Evans Planning Department contingent which took part in the ‘Movember Challenge’ this year. There were 5 of us in total, from various ranks among planning, representing both Montagu Evans, and Moustaches combined. That being said, my attempt was a complete failure, I was clearly the most limited in terms of the Hirsute Pursuit. With two weeks, and my colleagues transforming steadily into villains from spaghetti westerns, I had accepted the fact I was devoid of anything resembling a Tom Selleck, but I pressed on to the end, confident in my lack of tash. All in all the Montagu Evans Planning Tache Team raised £640, a solid effort bolstered by Miracle Gro.
